iBaby World’s Guide to Baby Clothes Sizes

For a new parent, the world of baby clothing can seem extremely confusing. Something as simple as buying clothes for a child can be a little overwhelming if you’re just walking in off the street into a shop. But iBaby World is here to help. If you come in to our Perth store, we’re always happy to walk you through baby clothes sizing, and how to decide which clothes will work best for your new baby.

But if you can’t make it into our store, not to worry! Here’s our rough guide to baby clothes for our online customers.

Size Chart

First off, let’s look at the traditional size chart for clothes for children under 12 months:

Size Age Weight
00000 Premature or Small infants >2kg
0000 Newborns >3kg
000 >3 months >6kg
00 3-6 months >8kg
0 6-9 months >10kg
1 9-12 months >12kg

This table, however, is not set in stone. Not all babies will follow this chart perfectly, some will move through the sizes faster than the parameters suggest, and some will move slower. It is not a race, and a lot of it has to do with your genetics. Don’t be surprised if your child zooms through a few sizes, and then spends a little more time at one size for a while. Babies move through growth periods that are completely natural.

iBaby World advises most new parents to purchase a few pieces in 0000 to start. Even if your child is small to start, they will move through to the 0000 sizing quite quickly. Otherwise, we recommend waiting until your child is born to make larger purchases of clothing so you can be sure you are buying the right things.

If you are purchasing baby clothes as a gift for friends or family, consider purchasing in the larger sizes, and consider buying gender neutral clothing. You can be sure the baby will move through the larger sizes at some point, and it will likely be used more than the smaller sizes. A gender neutral choice will also always come in handy, as some parents do like dressing their child in pinks and blues, but an easy, gentle choice is always useful for new parents.

If you’re still feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of buying baby clothes and would like more help, please don’t hesitate to give us a call, or come in and see us at our Perth shop. We would love to help you with your selection of baby clothes, whether you’re a new parent, a new grandparent, a returning parent, or a part of the dedicate cheer squad buying for family or friends.
